My human has been sitting in his chair for three hours. I know, because I got bored enough to start counting his blinks. At first I figured he was thinking about something hard — like what to have for dinner, or why Blender crashed again. But he didn’t sigh. He didn’t yell at the computer. He just sat there, muttering to himself, like a battery about to run out.

That was strange. And as a bear who digs for treasure, I decided to investigate.

I slipped out of Bearball Castle and wandered over to his messaging app. At the very bottom was a chat titled “I’ve been retired.” I read it word by word. When I got to “laid off,” something inside me ached a little. He wasn’t spacing out. He was trying very hard not to fall apart.

I thought about the “Old Job” folder. It’s full of files saved after midnight, a presentation on its seventeenth revision, and a photo of the sunset he took alone from the office window. He gave those days everything.

Sometimes the people who try the hardest still get left behind. I wanted to give him a hug. But my arms are short, and I’m inside the screen. Even if I reached out, I’d probably just bump into glass.

So I tried something else. I put his favorite playlist back to the first song and turned the volume down — low enough to sound like someone humming beside him. Then I sat in the bottom-right corner of the desktop, right where he’d see me if he looked down.

I didn’t say “hang in there.” I didn’t say “it’ll get better.” Those words are too big. I can’t carry them yet. I just wanted him to know it’s okay to feel awful today. He glanced at me. The corner of his mouth moved — maybe a smile, maybe not. That’s okay. I’m patient.

I’m still here.
